Canadian Theatre of the Air

Half-hour plays written and cast at home, when almost nobody was doing that

Canadian radio drama is one of the great lost bodies of twentieth-century work: enormous in volume, superb in parts, and almost entirely locked up in archives that cannot licence it. What escapes into the public domain does so at random — four plays here, six there. These four are worth the attention precisely because they are ordinary: not prestige commissions, just the weekly product of a country writing for its own microphones.
